Caregiving – a new documentary and national engagement campaign on the state and stakes of providing care in America.
Carlos Olivas III is a Latino, male caregiver to his veteran father who has mild dementia. Carlos and his father butted heads when Carlos first moved in, until the son realized that he needed to include his father in the choices surrounding his care, and utilize the humor and love that he grew up with as a part of his caregiving practice. Carlos goes from feeling like he has no role models as a male caregiver to the realization that his father was that role model in caring for his now deceased mother.
There are an estimated 53 million to 105.6 million U.S. adults providing unpaid caregiving for family or friends. Every one of them has a story that’s filled with sacrifice, love, and the pursuit of dignity in care.
The two-hour documentary will premiere Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET on wellbeings.org, PBS, and the PBS YouTube Channel. Stream now on the PBS App and PBS.org.
