My mother Joyce was a pastor who served her community lovingly for over 20 years. And then she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She slowly lost the very abilities that enabled her to serve. But through it all she maintained her faith in God, her desire to make a difference. So after she was diagnosed she asked me to produce a film about her experience, something that might be a message of hope to others living with the disease.

In the Night I Remember Your Name is an intimate chronicle of my mother’s journey as she struggles to reconcile her faith with her advancing Alzheimer’s. It is the story of a grandmother’s grief as she begins losing the very abilities her new granddaughter is learning. It is the story of a pastor’s relationship with God as she questions what is happening to her. It is a journey from anguish to acceptance. And in the end, it is a story of joy.

FESTIVAL SCREENINGS AND CREDITS

In the Night I Remember Your Name was nominated for Best Documentary at Kevin Smith’s Smodcastle Film Festival. It was screened for students in the School of Social Work at Columbia University and used to train new aides in an Alzheimer’s facility. And it was screened for professors, doctors, nurses, chaplains, and students as part of the Bioethics program at Georgetown University. It was a Finalist for the Screencraft Film Fund.

In the Night is currently airing on PBS. It features Academy Award Winner Marcia Gay Harden as the voice of Pastor Joyce.
