World Animal Day
October 4 All day
World Animal Day traces back to 1931, when it was proposed at a convention of ecologists in Florence, Italy as a way to highlight the plight of endangered species; the date, October 4, was chosen because it’s the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Today the observance has broadened well past endangered species to cover animal welfare more generally, including companion animals, farm animals, and wildlife affected by habitat loss and climate change. Organizations around the world use the day for adoption drives, welfare campaigns, and educational events about the human-animal bond. It’s a loose fit for Well Beings unless there’s a specific animal-related wellness angle, such as the mental health benefits of pet ownership or animal-assisted therapy.
