A BIPOC Guide to Starting Culturally Affirming Therapy
July 22 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
The thought of starting therapy can be overwhelming and intimidating, especially for Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). Talking to a stranger about your personal life might not just feel outside your comfort zone, but also be heavily stigmatized within your community. The pressure of finding a provider who understands your lived experience, cultural background, and unique stressors can leave you feeling unsure where to begin.
But therapy doesn’t have to be one-size-fits-all, or a clinical box that you have to force yourself into. It can, and should, be tailored to you and your needs.
Join Mental Health America for a live panel conversation with BIPOC therapists where they will help you consider how therapy could benefit your mental health and well-being.
During this 60-minute session, we will:
- Learn how to reframe therapy as a tool for personal and generational healing, rather than a sign of weakness.
- Discuss how to find providers who specialize in BIPOC experiences and meet your individual needs.
- Talk about what actually happens in a therapy session. We’ll break down what to expect so you can walk in feeling confident.
- Explore how therapy can look different (somatic work, community healing, narrative therapy) to fit your specific needs and comfort level.
