The Cycle of Change
Changing our behavior is hard. But it gets easier when we can see the cycle, because once we see it we can use it, rather than it using us.
Click each circle for details about each phase.
Precontemplation
Precontemplation is when we recognize that a problem exists but we don’t consider it comes from our behavior.
Contemplation
Contemplation is when we recognize that problem might have something to do with us, but we aren’t quite ready to do anything about it.
Preparation
Preparation is when we recognize that the problem is coming from our behavior and we are considering taking steps to change.
Action
Action is practicing what we have learned in Preparation about how to change our behavior to reduce the problem. The repetition of these actions will build good habits.
Repeat
Repeat is when we slip back into the behavior that caused the problem. It’s disappointing, but it helps us see where those pitfalls are and learn how to best
avoid them.
