World Meningitis Day

October 1, 2029 All day

World Meningitis Day is coordinated by the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations, a global network of patient groups and health professionals working to reduce the burden of meningitis worldwide. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, most often caused by bacterial or viral infection, and it can progress from flu-like symptoms to life-threatening illness within hours. The day is used to promote awareness of early warning signs, such as fever, stiff neck, and sensitivity to light, as well as the vaccines available to prevent several of the most common bacterial causes. For a general wellness audience, this is a good opportunity for a symptom-recognition post, since meningitis is one of those illnesses where speed of diagnosis genuinely changes outcomes.

WellBeings.org is a health and wellness resource, not a crisis or suicide response website. If you are in crisis, or experiencing thoughts of suicide, please call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or the LGBT National Hotline at (888) 843-4564. The service is free and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
