Winter Solstice

December 21, 2025 All day

The Winter Solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year, occurring around December 21st in the Northern Hemisphere (June 20th/21st in the Southern Hemisphere) when Earth’s tilt points it farthest from the sun, marking the beginning of longer days and celebrating the “rebirth” of the sun with festivals like Yule, Saturnalia, and Dōngzhì. It’s caused by Earth’s axial tilt, not its distance from the sun, and is a significant cultural event symbolizing light’s return.
