The International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime is observed annually on December 9th.
This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 to:
- Commemorate and honor the victims of genocide, recognizing the devastating impact of this crime on individuals, communities, and humanity as a whole.
- Raise awareness about the crime of genocide and its prevention and punishment.
- Recall the significance of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the “Genocide Convention”) and emphasize the importance of its universal ratification and implementation.
