Caregiving – a new documentary and national engagement campaign on the state and stakes of providing care in America.
Christine, 59, is a self-described “proud caregiver.” Originally from the Philippines, where she was a florist for 24 years, she left her own family behind and moved to the USA in order to provide for her four children. Today, Christine lives and works in southern California where she has been taking care of Betty five days a week for the past five years. In the Philippines, caring for older adults is deeply embedded in the culture, and Christine brings that to her job. While she loves her work, the sacrifice is enormous and she misses her own children. She dreams of moving home and retiring, but she has made a commitment to stay with Betty until the end.
There are an estimated 53 million to 105.6 million U.S. adults providing unpaid caregiving for family or friends. Every one of them has a story that’s filled with sacrifice, love, and the pursuit of dignity in care. Learn more about Caregiving, airing on PBS & Well Beings.org in 2025.
